Kelly Harbacheck Education: Throughout my career as a student at Iowa State University I have learned to question the meaning and impact of a design. Designing this website for Shelley Koren gave me the opportunity to apply what I have learned in school to a real world application. I have known Shelley for over 6 years, and ever since the first day I met her she has been the same enthusiastic, passionate, and creative individual that I know today. |
Creating this website gave me the opportunity to explore my design skills, but most importantly gave me the chance to bond with Shelley. I met Shelley through her son, Nick Koren. As a good friend of Nick's I have spent many hours in the Koren residence passing time with friends, eating dinners with the Koren family, or sitting around their bonfire. Shelley has always been there for me to have long conversations about life until late hours of the night, yet before having her as a client I never completly understood her dedication to quilting. The critiques that Shelley gave me about my webpage designs made me realize that her experience as a quilter gives her the chance to study a composition from a different perspective. She saw everything as a balance of positive and negitive spaces through blocks, and explained to me that it was because she designs her quilting artwork through seeing blocks in relation to one another. The final outcome of all of the blocks together is what makes a quilt. The best compliment I recieved from Shelley was that I had captured her passion of quilting through my designs. As a designer this meant a lot to me because conveying a persons passions in life is one of the most rewarding experiences. Yet I would respond to Shelley's compliment by saying that it is not my work that has conveyed her passion for quilting; it is her beautifully composed hand-crafted charismatic designs that express a quilter's love for their artform.
